Explain the advantages and disadvantages of horizontal and vertical wind machines?

Friends, today in this article we will learn  about the advantages and disadvantages of horizontal and vertical wind machines.  I am going to give information about all these in a very good way. So let’s start.

Horizontal Wind Machines

This machine rotates along the horizontal axis. Hence it is known as horizontal wind machine. Horizontal wind machine mainly has the following features.

Benefit

  1. The rotating rod in it is parallel to the horizontal. It has a rotating blade at one end and a wind direction indicator at the other end. This wind vane keeps the blade in the direction of the wind.

2 The rotating blade always makes an angle of 90° with the rotating rod.

  1. This machine can easily rotate in the direction of the wind.
  2. This type of machine works like a windmill and as an aerogenerator (wind electricity producer).
  3. These machines can be made of wood, metal or concrete.

Disadvantages

  1. There is difficulty in taking the blades and tower to high height (45m).
  2. Tall horizontal axis wind turbines require skilled labour and expensive cranes to install.
  3. To support the heavy blades, gearbox and generator, huge (complex) towers need to be constructed.

Vertical Wind Machines

This machine rotates perpendicular to the horizontal axis and the rotor blades of this machine always remain vertical. Hence, for these reasons, this machine is called a vertical wind machine.

Benefit

  1. Its main rod always rotates vertically.
  2. The rotation direction indicator of this machine always rotates parallel to the rotation axis.
  3. In this type of machine the direction of wind is of no importance, i.e. no matter which direction the wind comes from, this machine will always keep moving at the speed of wind.
  4. This type of machine cannot be used to extract water from a well.

Disadvantages

  1. These machines cannot be made of greater height because there are problems of long shaft, bearing, long wires.
  2. These are very heavy because they are made of solid metals.
