Biochemical based Gobar Gas Power Plant
In a bio-chemical based biogas power plant, the production of cowdung gas (methane) from the cowdung gas plant can be used in various ways. Methane gas is flammable. In a thermal power plant, cowdung gas is used by burning the gas in a boiler and converting water into high pressure compressed steam at high temperature to generate electricity by rotating the blades of a turbine connected mechanically to a generator.
In the second method, integrated gas turbines can also generate electricity from a combined cycle power plant. This will typically require a gasifier capable of producing gas with a heat content of around 19 MJ/NM³. The syngas from the gasifier must first be cleaned to remove impurities such as alkali metals, which can damage the gas turbine. The clean gas is fed into the combustion chamber of the gas turbine where it is burned to produce a hot gas flow. This drives the turbine, which produces electricity.
The hot exhaust gases from the turbine are used to produce steam in a recovery steam generator. This high temperature steam drives the turbine to produce more power.
Low grade waste heat from the steam generator exhaust can be utilized within the plant and may be used to preheat the biomass fuel prior to being fed into the gasifier or to preheat the fuel prior to entering the gasifier reactor pole.
In thermochemical processes, biomass (dung, human waste, municipal waste, wood, crop stubble) is converted into useful energy either by providing heat or through a suitable chemical process.
The processes do not necessarily produce useful energy directly, but are used to convert biomass into more convenient forms of energy such as gas oil or methanol under controlled temperature and oxygen conditions.
