Fuel intake and fuel collection system in a diesel power plant
Fuel oil is brought to the plant location by trucks, railway wagons and oil tankers. At an unloading facility the oil is pumped into the main storage tank from where it is pumped into smaller service tanks called engine day tanks that store up to eight hours of operation. To reduce the pumping power of the oil, the viscosity of the oil is reduced by heating it with hot water or steam.
The fuel injection system is the heart of a diesel engine. The engines that drive the electric generator have low speed and the compression chamber promotes the mixing of fuel and air. The fuel injection system performs the following functions-
(a) Filters the fuel.
(b) Notes (with meter) the correct amount of fuel injected.
(c) Saves time in the injection process.
(d) Regulates the fuel supply.
(e) Secures the atomization of fuel oil.
(f) Atomized fuel is accurately distributed throughout the compression chamber.
The oil is atomized by a blast of air or a pressure jet. Diesel engines have air blast fuel atomization where compressed air at about 70 bar is used to atomize and inject the fuel oil. Such air compressors require a storage tank which is expensive. In pressure jet atomization the fuel oil is forced to flow through spray nozzles at pressures above 100 bar. This is known as solid injection which is more common. The solid injection systems are of the following types.
(i) Common rail injection system
(ii) Separate pump injection system
(iii) Distributor system
