How is solar energy used in solar water heating? Explain?

Friends, today in this article we will learn  about how solar energy is used in solar water heating.  I am going to give you information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.

Thermosyphon is the simplest body of solar water heater. In solar water heater, hot water is collected at the top of the tank by using the principle of thermosyphon. Fin type heat exchanger is used to collect solar radiation. Copper plates are blackened to collect solar radiation. All the connected pipes and hot water tank are covered with heat insulation so that water remains hot for 24 hours. They do not require much maintenance.

Some of the commercial solar water heaters are as follows-

(i) Natural Circulation Solar Water Heater (Pressurized)

(ii) Natural circulation solar water heater (Non-pressurized)

(iii) Forced Circulating Solar Water Heater

Natural Circulation Solar Water Heater

A natural circulation solar water heater is shown in Figure 1. It consists of a south facing collector, transparent glass cover, separate storage tank and insulated pipes. No additional energy is required to circulate the water.

Circulation takes place by natural convection or thermosyphon. When water undergoes heating, cold water flows from the bottom surface of the tank to the top of the storage tank. It is again passed through the lower heater of the collector. Hence, there is a difference in the density of both cold and hot water. This difference in density maintains a pressure for water circulation. Hot water is replaced by cold water. These are installed at a place where sunlight is received in large quantities. A non-freezing liquid is used in the collector circuit. Thermosyphon solar water heater is a passive system. It does not require a mechanical pump for water circulation. It is used more in rural areas.

Natural Circulation Solar Water Heater

A natural circulation solar water heater is shown in Figure 2. The non-pressurized system is inexpensive and easy to install. It also does not require a mechanical pump. It has a valve to prevent reverse circulation.

A mechanical pump is used in this. It is installed between the bottom of the storage tank and the lower end of the collector.
