Define microcontroller?

Friends, today in this article  I am going to give you information about microcontroller  in a very good way. So let’s start.

Microcontroller

A microcontroller (MC or UC) is a single chip microcomputer made from VLSI fabrication. A microcontroller is also known as an embedded controller. At present, various types of microcontrollers are available in the market. Such as 4-bit, 8-bit, 64-bit, 128-bit and 256-bit. Microcontroller is manufactured by microprocessor. Its main feature is that it can be used in control system with storage capacity. The number of components working in a microprocessor based control system is more than that of microcontroller control system, hence its use is economical as well as effective.

The internal block diagram of the microcontroller is shown in the figure.

A control system based on a microprocessor is not as beneficial as a control system based on a microcontroller. This can be understood through the following points-

  1. The overall cost of the control system is higher due to the presence of more components.
  2. Microprocessor control systems require more PCBs because they contain more number of components.
  3. Due to the use of discrete components in this type of control board, its reliability is not high.

Following are the major advantages of microcontroller design-

  1. The design of the microcontroller is small and convenient.
  1. It is a single chip structure. Hence its cost is low.
  2. RAM, ROM and I/O ports are present on the microcontroller chip, but RAM, ROM and I/O ports can be used for interfaces as additional storage.
