Single phase preventer
Relay is used for single phase protection. This relay is called single phase protection relay. It is a control drive, by which the fault occurring in any phase is recognized. In case of fault in the phase, the relay contacts get energized. PLC is also used in single phase protection system, in which the circuit is switched off by PLC based on the faulty signals given by the relay.
Single phase protection system works on the basis of two types of sensing –
- Voltage sensing
- Current sensing
Both the above sensors monitor the system and provide information to the trip circuit in case of a fault or failure.
Working of single phase protection system

Under the circuit, 3 terminals are provided for 30 volts supply, 2 terminals for single phase supply and 3 terminals of the contactor are provided for single phasing preventer. Various types of control parameters are set in this device. Through these, the abnormal situation arising in the phase sequence is monitored.
Based on the command in the PLC connected to it, the output voltage of the circuit becomes zero.
This system works like a negative sequence relay in current sensing single phase protection. It provides protection to the terminals of the motor during motor operation. Its working is based on the principle of negative sequence element and it is also used by various relay manufacturers for additional functions like reverse phasing.
