Friends, today in this article we will know about the advantages and disadvantages of diesel power plant. I am going to give information about all these in a very good way. So let’s start.
Advantages
- These can be started very quickly so that electrical power can be made available immediately when required.
- It occupies less space.
- There are less auxiliary equipment in this.
- The cost on this is less.
- This power plant works satisfactorily at different loads and its efficiency is not affected much even at low load.
- Its design and construction is also simple and it has less emergency losses.
- Less water is required for cooling and less staff is required for operation compared to other power houses.
- Diesel power plants are suitable where less electrical power is generated. For example- Diesel power plants are used as stand by power stations in central railway stations, small factories, hospitals, telegraph offices, radio stations, cinema halls etc.
Disadvantages
(i) Their operation is costly because diesel is expensive. Hence the energy produced by them is expensive.
(ii) They cannot be operated continuously at overload whereas a thermal power plant can be operated continuously at 25% overload above its capacity.
(iii) The gases emitted cause a lot of noise, which leads to noise pollution.
(iv) Their useful life is very short, about 10 to 15 years.
(v) It is very costly to run them as base load plants.
(vi) It is not suitable for generating large amounts of electric power
