Friends, today in this article we will learn about the structure of a vertical wind machine. I am going to give information about all this in a very good way. So let’s start.
Windmills are mainly divided into two parts-
(a) Horizontal Axis Wind Machine
(b) Vertical Axis Wind Machine
Horizontal axis wind machine
Horizontal axis wind machines are mostly used. It can be divided into five types-
(i) Horizontal axis wind machine with two aerodynamic blades- In this type of wind machine, electricity is produced by using a step up gear box to drive the rotor and generator. These components are mounted on a tower on a base plate (structure). The cost of these blades is very high. Therefore, not more than two can be installed.
(ii) Horizontal axis propeller single blade wind machine – It has a long blade mounted on the hub, along with induction generator and gear box. Blade length can be 60 m or more. Counter weight is fitted on the other side for balancing. Due to less blade weight, its cost is also less. In this type of machine, vibration is also more due to aerodynamic torque.
(iii) Horizontal axis wind machine with multiple blades- This type of machine has multiple blades made of sheet metal or aluminium. This machine works even in wind speeds of 60 km per hour. The power coefficient in these is quite good and the cost is also less.
(iv) Horizontal axis Dutch type fermentation machine – It has only four blades whose surface is made of wooden strips. These rotate only at high air velocity. This is the oldest machine.
(v) Sail Type Wind Machine – There are many variations in this type of wind machine. In this, the surface of the rotor is made of cloth, nylon or plastic etc.
vertical axis wind machine
As the name of this machine suggests, the rotor blades in it are vertical. Due to the different shapes of the rotor, the machine always runs at the speed of the wind. This machine is based on drag force. These machines have high torque and low tip to wind speed.
Savonius rotor wind machine
This is one of the modern types of wind energy conversion machines. It is mainly for low velocity wind. It was invented by S.J. Savonius in 1920. Its manufacturing cost is low and also low velocity wind energy is required for operation.
It is made by cutting the drum in half and joining them in opposite directions to form an S-shaped structure. These two semi-cylindrical drums are placed on a vertical axis, perpendicular to the wind direction so that there is a little distance between the axes of both. It is a machine with cup-like blades in which the wind force is more on the cup part rather than the curved part. Due to this, the ratio of height and diameter is usually kept 3:1 which can also be changed. The power coefficient and efficiency of this machine is low. Therefore, they are used for battery charging and grain winnowing.
What did you learn today :-
Now you must have known the structure of a vertical wind machine and you must have got the answer to all these questions well.
